The real weight loss cost cannot be measured in dollars. The real cost of being over weight or obese is in relationships, quality of life and shortened life span.

Relationship with bosses, friends, opposite sex and even family are affected by our physical appearance. Regardless of what we chose to say or pretend to believe, our relationship options are limited by our physical appearance. We can be down graded to a friend or rejected for the "job", because we do not fit the image of the person doing the choosing.

If you are really overweight, your body must work harder which shortens your life span. The body wears out faster and loses the ability to function. If you work out hard and longer to stay in shape, you face the possible damage to your body which can effect your quality of life. Very few things can effect you quality of life like back pain or knee pain. The answer must be between these two extremes.

Most people are unaware of why they fail at weight loss time after time, but they keep trying which makes the weight loss industry a big business. People's failure at weight loss or maintaining their desired weight is that the time and effort needed to burn off the excess pounds seems beyond our ability to maintain over a longer period. when life gets in the way, our motivation weakens, we skip secessions and the weight returns.

Conventional wisdom is that large amounts of time and effort are required in exercising for weight loss. "NO PAIN-NO GAIN" is the quote. This does work, but it is outdated like comparing a horse and buggy to a automobile. Both will get you to where you want to go, but one does it faster, easier and more comfortable.

We can accept access to the internet on our cell phones and other amazing technology, but refused to believe that we have developed a machine, which can in ten minutes a day with no sweat, cause one to lose weight and even maintain that weight loss in 10 minutes daily for the rest of your life.

If you are desperate for rapid weight loss, you are going to benefit from some timely diet advice and exercise tips. Just what do you mean by your claim of desperation? But without some concerted effort and determination, you are never going to convince me or anyone else that you are desperate to lose weight, let alone the most important person in the world - you!

So. Desperate? Determined? Ready to put in a bit of an effort?

Let's just go back one little step and reflect on where you are at the moment.

How much weight do you need to lose to be in the healthy weight range for your height and bone density (are you fine, medium or heavy boned?) At the rate of 2-3 kilograms per calendar month, how long is it going to take you to lose that weight? By the way, if you go at it at this steady rate, you are highly likely to keep off your excess weight forever.

Now, your mathematical calculations may not equate to what you believe should be rapid weight loss, but it will be a heck of a lot quicker and more permanent than another crash diet or worse still, inaction on your part.

The diet advice that you need to take heed of if you are desperate to lose weight is this

1. Cease your habit of eating food that is bad for you. Saturated fats should make up no more than 10% of your daily food intake. That translates to, give up eating deep fried rubbish. It's only fat and salt when you really analyse it. Your body doesn't need it and after a few short weeks, your mind will stop craving it.

If you can ban french fries from your life you will have made a huge stride towards permanent weight loss and better health forever.

While you are at it, cut down your simple carbs. Highly processed sugary treats need to be occasional treats, not 3 times a day diet basics. Have a piece of cake as part of your once-a-week cheat meal if cake is what you like. Look forward to it and savour it. If you are desperate to lose weight, you can make this "sacrifice".

2. Don't eat so much all at once. Rather than gorging till you're tip top full on 2 to 3 big meals a day plus an evening treat, re-organise the food in your day so that you have breakfast every single day of your life and a decent lunch, with good snacks in between.

Cut down your night time portions - your body does not need to or want to sleep on a full stomach. (While you are asleep, your cunning body will stockpile the food from your stomach to the fat deposits on your hips, thighs and waist. Stay awake and watch it if you don't believe me.)

3. Get some regular exercise. Honestly, what else would you be doing in that precious hour of exercise-for-me time? Squeezing in one more hour of listless work, watching an hour of brain dead television, eating mindlessly cause you're bored?

Get out there and get some alert enjoyment into your life. Make those endorphins pump for you. You'll love it once you've made a habit out of it.

Now all that doesn't sound too severe in the cold light of day, does it? Eat better, eat less and get some regular exercise. If you take this basic diet advice, your excess weight will drop off steadily.

Be calm and calculating. Drop the desperate mind set to lose weight quickly and permanent weight loss will be yours.

Monitoring Fat Loss Accurately

Most people only know how to monitor their weight with a scale. The problem with this method is that the scale does not differentiate between how much of the "weight" is fat and how much is muscle. Losing "weight" is easy...the difficult part is losing fat and keeping it off. So, how can you accurately monitor your fat levels?

I like using an economical and practical method that I can still do in the privacy of my home, the skin fold test (also known as the "pinch an inch" method). This test is based on the fact that most of the fat is stored directly under the skin. The skin fold test has been found to be as accurate and reliable as other elaborate methods for testing body fat without the time, expense and equipment. The skin fold test is performed with a device called a skin fold caliper.

So how do you use a skin fold caliper to measure fat? Most body fat formulas require you to measure fat at 3 different locations then adding up the sum for your total. You can get these measurements from either the suprailliac (the spot about 1 inch above the point of your hip bone), abdominal, chest, bicep or tricep areas. Follow these steps to measure your fat levels:

(1) Pinch the skin in 3 of the areas defined above between your index finger and thumb and gently pull the skin.
(2) Place the jaws of the caliper over the pinched skin fold about 1/4 inch from your index finger and thumb and clamp down until you have a firm hold of your skin. The caliper jaws measure the thickness of the skin fold and fat in millimeters. Most devices have a slide member that automatically moves across the measurement arm as you clamp down on the device and stops at the appropriate reading/measurement.
(3) Make sure you take a vertical fold and not a horizontal fold.
(4) Look up the sum of the skin folds (from the 3 areas measured) on the percent fat estimate chart that comes with the calipers. These charts are derived from mathematical regression equations and allow for quick and easy interpretation of the skin fold measurements.

Simply follow the above steps on a regular basis to accurately track your fat loss process. Remember to keep a journal and document your progress. If the numbers are not what you expect or want, simple adjust your diet as needed and kick up your cardio training to the next level.
