A Common Diet Mistake That Can Slow Your Metabolism

The main goal of any diet is to lose weight, right? Here's the problem, though. Many diets that are supposed to promote fast weight loss can actually slow down your metabolism instead - not only making weight loss harder but at the same time making it easier to gain weight. One of the most common diet mistakes that many people make is eating too few calories. This article will discuss why "starvation diets" are not the answer to fast weight loss and how they can actually do more harm than good.

We all know that either eating fewer calories or burning more calories will lead to weight loss. Logically, then, it would seem that by eating hardly any calories you should be able to lose a lot of weight quickly, right? Wrong! At a certain point when you cut your calorie intake too low your body begins to think that you are starving. As a result it slows down your metabolism and starts to hang on for dear life to any extra body fat that you may have since it doesn't know when you are going to get your next meal.

Even if your brain knows that you aren't starving and that you can run to the store and get more food anytime you want to, your body reacts based on instinct and slows down your metabolism with the goal of keeping you alive.

A slower metabolism is bad news when it comes to weight loss. When your metabolism is sluggish it will be harder for you to lose weight no matter how little you eat. Not only that, but when you go off your diet and start eating normally again it will be very easy to gain back any weight that you may have lost. That's one of the reasons that so many of us wind up yo-yo dieting for years and never being able to lose weight and keep it off for good.

Rather than going on a very low calorie diet in the hopes of losing weight try cutting out about 500 calories per day from your normal diet. Aim for eating nutrient rich foods that give your body all the vitamins that it needs since you will be much less likely to binge or fall of the wagon with your diet. Adding light to moderate exercise to your weight loss program can increase the rate at which you lose weight as well. By losing weight slowly and steadily it will be much easier for you to keep it off and to maintain your new, slim physique.

If you would like to lose weight more quickly than a pound a week without slowing your metabolism down you may want to consider shifting calories. The basic concept behind shifting calories is that you vary the number of calories to trick your body so it doesn't slow your metabolism. A good diet plan that relies on calorie shifting is Fat Loss for Idiots which allows you to lose 9 pounds every 11 days without causing your metabolism to slow. How to Lose Weight With Lemonade

Have you heard rumors of a lemonade diet? Or maybe you've heard you can actually lose weight with lemonade? Hard as it might be for some to believe, it's actually true. And there are a couple of ways it can be done...

First let's look at what's known as the "Lemonade Diet". This is actually just another type of juice fast diet. In other words, all you do is drink lemonade and water for several days. It's not quite that simple but that is the gist of things.

Lemons are extremely high in vitamins and nutrients, plus they help clean out your colon. So here's the details of how this diet works:

1. Create real lemonade from the juice of lemons. If you try using bottled lemon juice - or worse: Instant powdered lemonade drink, you will not see any progress. The powdered stuff is usually just lemon flavored sugar water, and the bottled juice often has preservatives and other misc stuff included that's not great for your body.

So squeeze some real lemons, or use a juice machine. Either way, make sure you're using fresh lemon juice.

2. Mix in organic maple syrup to taste. This is used for sweetener, but it also provides you with additional vitamins and minerals to help keep you healthy during your juice fast. It also helps keep your blood sugar from dropping too low.

Since this is a form of sugar though, it should be used cautiously - especially by diabetics. Too much of any kind of sugar will prevent you from losing weight.

3. Mix in water to taste. Straight lemon juice by itself is way too tart for most of us, no matter how much syrup might be mixed in. It's usually a good idea to use filtered or spring water here, to be sure you're not feeding your body all the junk and pollutants that come from our taps.

Create a new batch of this juice each day. Usually one gallon mixed at the beginning of the day is good, then you simply drink the juice all day long. You can have as many glasses of pure water as you'd like too.

This diet has been maintained by some for multiple months with great success. A juice fast of any kind can be dangerous though, and I don't recommend doing one for longer than one or two weeks - if you must.

A better, and safer way to use Lemonade in your weight loss efforts, is to simply include it with your regular healthy meals. Lemonade - in fact any citrus - will help slow the digestion of carbs in your system. So having lemonade with your meal will effectively help reduce how fast your body reacts to the carbs in that meal. And by reducing how fast it reacts of course, you reduce the whole cycle of insulin spikes that cause the weight gain problems to begin with.

You still need to make healthier choices with your meals of course though. Having a tall glass of lemonade with your chocolate cake is not likely to produce the weight loss progress you'd like.

Goal Setting Tips for Weight Loss

You can lose fat forever by using goal achievement strategies. This isn't motivational fluff. This is hands-on change your mindset for success secret information.

I interviewed Dax Moy for a special report called, "Mastering the Fat Loss Mindset" and he shows you how to achieve your fat loss goals for good! Here's Dax Moy talking about goal-setting for weight loss. Use his tips and tricks to help you stick to your plan for good!

"What is it that you actually want? What is it that you actually want? Not, what will you settle for, what seems realistic.

What is it that you actually truly want if I were to wave a magic wand in front of you right now and say okay, in 2008 all of your dreams are going to come true and given you already, in relation to your body, how it's going to look, how it's going to perform, how it's going feel, then what would you ask for right now with magic wand in hand?

And that is really the goal that people should be setting for themselves. That's really the goal that people should be attacking when the new year comes in certainly.

And that's really the only type of goal that's going to hold enough power to keep you on the straight and narrow for long enough. Because when you feel really passionate about something, things don't feel like an effort. We all know that. We've all read books that we absolutely love, and we get lost in the time and we can't believe it's, we can't believe that four hours have been gone by while you've been reading.

It's no different with any form of a passion. When you are truly moving toward a passion, when you are truly enjoying what you doing and you can really see where the potential benefits of pursuing that passion lie you'll stay on track.

If, on the other hand you set a goal that's smaller because someone has told you what you've, what you're asking for is unrealistic, the chances are in that moment where they've told you that you are being unrealistic, what they also did was, was beat a huge chunk of your passion around the head with a rubber mallet and actually told you to stop being silly. Don't invest so much passion into this and hey, just focus on the smaller goal.

That's the best way to fail, and I think that's one of the biggest reasons why a lot of people do fail."

Powerful words! Dax has given you an incredible plan for Mastering the Fat Loss Mindset. By doing so, you'll be prepared for all of the obstacles in your way as you work towards weight loss.

So stick to your plan through proper goal setting. Start by identifying exactly what you want. Don't settle for less. Aim high, and then adjust your mindset to achieve permanent weight loss.

A lot of people have been asking how to get a flat belly fast but what we need to understand is that these things need time to take effect. So many weight loss programs in the market have been promoting the theme that the steps to getting a flat belly is as simple as A B C.

From having pills, medicines to books, we get blinded by all the fancy names of these products that makes great promises of guaranteed results, only to write in small imprint that they do not guarantee results can work for anyone. Always beware of products that promises immediate results. You know in your heart that it is probably too good to be true.

Always remember to apply simple logic and common sense. If you want to lead a fat-free life, remember that you need to take each stage one step at a time and not make any dramatic shift in the way you have always been used to. Although I am suggesting making small and gradual changes to your lifestyle, you must always understand what is the best way to achieve your target.

I have listed 3 tips that you can start applying now.

Tip 1:

What small steps am I talking about? For example, you can start off with coffee. How about not putting any cream into your coffee or replace sugar cubes with artificial sugar instead? You can also slowly reducing the amount of pasta or rice that you will consume everyday. Just do one thing at a time and gradually cut out more foods that are unhealthy or that will cause you to lose weight. If you can apply this first tip, you should be able to see results to getting a flatter belly soon.

Tip 2:

Eat fresh fruit in the morning, or eat some cereal. Always take your breakfast as this will be considered your most important meal of the day. Research have shown that people who do not take breakfast tend to gain more weight as they will compensate the energy needed during lunch and dinner.

Also for choices of food, remember to take more sweet potatoes and yams, avoid potatoes, white rice or pasta. Have more vegetables as well. The idea here is to prevent you from eating heavily for dinner especially. Most of the people who has a thick waistline attributes to having a heavy dinner every night.

Tip 3:

Choose the exercises that you will enjoy. Many people make the mistake of forcing themselves to jog even though they simply hate jogging. They may run for 3 months and just give up after that. So pick a sport that you will be eager to do and not drag your feet. If you prefer to spend your time in the gym, do different exercises and variations to shock your muscles and enjoy the feeling of the strain in the muscles after a good workout.

Hope that these 3 tips on how to get a flat belly fast will prove useful to your small steps towards building your abs in the near future.

How To Lose Weight Fast And Easy

If you want to know how to lose weight fast and easy then you should read the rest of this article as that is exactly what I am going to be talking about.

Losing weight quickly is something that many people believe is impossible or at least extremely difficult, well, it can be, if you don't have the right system and information to follow. If you have a solid, proven system that will guide you through the process then you ave half the battle already won, all you need to do is finish it.

How To Lose Weight Fast And Easy

Here are some little tips for you that I think are important:

* Active, active, active - Activity is one of the most simple yet effective methods for losing weight you can use, if you are keeping yourself active and not sitting around being lazy then you should find it much easier to lose weight. One of the times that comfort eating becomes so much more tempting is when you are sitting at home watching television or something like that, therefore, if you do that less then there is less chance of this happening.

* Exercise in the morning - Some studies have shown that you are likely to burn more fat when you exercise soon after waking up in the morning compared to other times of the day, therefore, it would be a good idea to set yourself a goal of exercising for twenty to thirty minutes each morning as soon as you wake up, this may actually be easier for you as you will be fresh and not tired from a long day.

* Another good tip when it comes to exercising is to take a quick walk after you eat a meal, this helps to burn calories during the digestion of food, this doesn't have to be a long or hard exercise, just a short 15 minute walk after your dinner in the evening, you don't have to do it after every single meal.

These tips are very simple to do yet they can have a great affect on your weight loss progress, you should continue to read and learn about how to lose weight fast and easy as there are other things you can and should do to make the process quicker and easier for yourself.

Cancer Risk and Body Weight

According to a recent report, a third of cancers may be caused by poor diet and lack of exercise and could be prevented. It urges people to keep weight down and abstain from too much fast food, red and preserved meat, salt and alcohol.

The report from the World Cancer Research Fund is the most comprehensive overview of the role that food, drink, obesity and inactivity play in causing cancer. It concludes that changes in our lifestyle play as big a role as stop smoking in reducing the risk for cancer.

What is most striking about this report is not the suggestion of links between lifestyle and certain cancers, but the overwhelming strength of the relationships. Excess body weight was shown to be one of the main predictors of several types of cancers such as endometrial, esophageal, pancreatic, bowel, post-menopausal breast, and kidney cancers.

Therefore, it is of little surprise that at the top of the report's recommendations is that people should keep their weight down throughout their life. That might be good advice for individuals who have been able to maintain a lower body weight, but it can be daunting for the 2/3rds of Canadian's who are considered overweight or obese.

A common misconception is that the excess weight itself is the unhealthy culprit. Although the actual fat mass does have some health implications, we must not lose focus that it is the poor diet and lack of activity that excess weight typically represents that is the greater health problem.

Since it is still not clear if it is the excess weight or the lifestyle that lead to weight gain that increases cancer risk, we should be cautious not to focus solely on weight and body fat alone. Keep in mind that many studies have shown that even modest amounts of weight loss through improved diet and physical activity have tremendous health improving effects.

The World Cancer Research Fund recommendations are as follows:

  1. Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight. Maintain a healthy weight through a balanced diet and regular physical activity to help keep your risk lower.
  2. Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day. Keep in mind that any type of activity counts.
  3. Avoid sugary drinks. Limit consumption of energy-dense foods (particularly processed foods high in added sugar, low in fiber, or high in fat) Try to eat lower energy-dense foods such as vegetables, fruits and whole grains instead. Opt for water or unsweetened tea or coffee in place of sugary drinks.
  4. Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes.
  5. Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork and lamb) and avoid processed meats. Aim to limit intake of red meat to less than 500g cooked weight (about 700-750g raw weight) a week. Try to avoid processed meats such as bacon, ham, salami, corned beef and some sausages.
  6. If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day. Any alcohol consumption can increase your risk of cancer, though there is some evidence to suggest that small amounts of alcohol can help protect against heart disease. Therefore, if you choose to drink, do so in moderation.
  7. Limit consumption of salty foods and food processed with salt (sodium). Try to use herbs and spices to flavour your food and remember that processed foods, including bread and breakfast cereals, can contain large amounts of salt.
  8. Don't use supplements to protect against cancer. Research shows that high-dose nutrient supplements can affect our risk of cancer, so it's best to opt for a balanced diet without supplements.

Fooled by Cardio? Here's the Better Way

Aerobics are a waste of time. You can burn fat and improve your health without cardio. Long, slow to moderate intensity cardio training, which is what you see most people still doing in the gym, is not really the best way to shed fat.

Interval training, which is periods of short hard exercise followed by short periods of recovery, works better for fat loss, according to both Canadian and Australian researchers (plus hundreds of advanced trainers throughout the world).

An interval might last 30 seconds to 60 seconds, and it would be hard work, harder than normal cardio. Each work interval is followed by 30 to 90 seconds of very easy pace. So if you're running on a treadmill you might run at 7 mph for your work interval and then go all the way down to 3 mph for a walk for your rest. That's what we use instead of slow cardio. All it takes is 20 minutes of interval training to get better results than 40 or 60 minutes of slow cardio.

Now the research and experience is showing that the intervals not only as effective, but it's even more effective in most cases. And also you're doing fewer repetitions. So, you know, every time you run we'll count that as repetitions, so if you run for 60 minutes you're looking at maybe 3,000, 4,000 repetitions in a slow cardio workout where you're doing probably one-third of that or even one-fifth of that in interval workout.

And that leads to less overuse injuries and that's one of the big problems with long slow cardio is that a lot of people end up in the physiotherapy office getting some type of therapy for their overuse injuries. Runners are in there all the time getting their injuries looked after.

So, we're trying to cut back on the volume of work, cutting back on the quantity and focusing on the quality. And like I said, we started off just by doing it to save time and now we're also finding out that we're actually getting more results.

Pick from a big variety of interval methods. It doesn't just have to be running on a treadmill. Clients have started to incorporate a lot of jump rope intervals, which jump rope can be very intense, so I think that's a great, you know, just think of ways that you can make things fun and things that you may enjoy doing.

You might not enjoy running, so find something that you do enjoy doing like jump roping or maybe getting on a stationary bike, but do it, make it real intense for a shorter period of time, then back up that intensity and do a interval type workout and I think you're going to have fun doing it.

To me it's more fun than walking for an hour on a treadmill and you're going to get more benefit out of it and it's going to take a less amount of time. Less amount of workout time, better results, and more fun. You're looking at probably at least a dozen different ways you can do interval training. Sports are intervals. And again that's more fun. You can also do biking or rowing. There's all types of traditional cardio machine that can be used.

We also use sometimes kettlebells and we also use body weight circuits, which are not really interval training but they're not strength training and they're definitely not cardio, but we find that body weight circuits are beneficial in a whole bunch of different ways.

They like interval training to help burn calories and lose body fat, but also because most people are doing exactly what we're doing right now, which is sitting in a chair all day, they're either driving or they're at work and they're in that one posture. Then they get in an elliptical machine and it's not much different.

Don't get stuck in a rut. Move your body.

So there's a whole lot to be said for the body weight circuit training. You can definitely find some of my circuit training videos on YouTube, will give you lots of ideas, but basically what we do there is we generally will take an upper body exercise and a lower body exercise or a whole bunch of them and we'll alternate between upper and lower. Maybe we'll do six or eight exercises in a circuit, take a minute rest, and then go through that again.

Twenty minutes of that, it goes by a lot faster. Interval training goes by a lot faster than regular cardio. Cardio is slow and boring. Bodyweight training is not. Interval training is over fast.

So what we're really trying to do is show people that there's so many other options to getting a better body than what they've read in the muscle magazines or Shape Magazine for the last 20 years since the 1980s that you have to do an hour of circuit training with machines and then an hour on the cardio machine.

That's not a great way to live life and it's not the best way to get results, especially when you look at the body in terms of everything from not only how it looks but also how it moves with the mobility.

And these days were just so immobile in our daily lives that we need to get more movement patterns into our training sessions. And again it's more variety and a lot more fun. So drop the slow cardio and do some type of fat burning interval training to lose belly fat.

Use fast fat burning workouts with bodyweight exercises and interval training

Starting a Weight Loss Workout Program

In the world today, millions of people are either overweight or obese. Medical experts believe that this number is growing at an epidemic rate. One of the biggest contributing factors is the alarming lack of exercise for most people. This is especially true for children. They often spend most of their free time in front of the TV or playing the latest computer game rather than playing more active games outside.

One way to combat the effects of obesity is to develop a weight loss workout program. Depending on the degree of obesity, this can be difficult for the person suffering from the weight problem.

When you think of a weight loss workout program, what comes to mind? For most people, the image is a strenuous workout on huge machines, huffing and puffing, struggling to catch a breath, with your clothes soaked with sweat, and a lot of other people around to watch them. They often feel like they will be laughed at, and in turn, choose to do nothing. This puts their health and possibly their lives at risk.

The truth is, that a weight loss workout program can include many different types of workouts. It can be as simple as starting out taking walks around the block and increasing the distance every month. Buying a treadmill may give you the incentive to start a weight loss workout program in the privacy of your own home. You can gradually work up to a fitness center when they feel comfortable doing so. A weight loss workout program can be as aggressive as you choose.

For those who want to join a fitness center, and have no idea what type of workout program is right for them, there are personal trainers who can assist you in forming a weight loss workout program that is perfect for you.

Before you start, however, it is important that you remember to consult your physician first. Before starting any type of weight loss workout program you need to rule out any underlying problems. Once you get started, you will be surprised at how easy it is to add your new routine as a daily habit. The key is to start slowly, then gradually build up your time as it becomes easier.

A weight loss exercise plan does not have to mean deprivation or back-breaking exercise routines. To discover simple strategies for lasting weight loss and a free book of delicious recipes, be sure to check out my Painless Weight Loss blog at: http://www.painless-weight-loss.com/

Now all these years people have been worried about high cholesterol levels. But in addition to lowering bad cholesterol, a new study shows that high levels of GOOD cholesterol should also be the focus of our efforts.

In fact, your levels of HDL could be the most important determinant of your risk for heart disease.

First, some definitions...

LDL (low-density lipoprotein): LDL is also known as the "bad" cholesterol. It is the cholesterol that builds up in your arteries, increasing your risk of heart disease.

HDL (high-density lipoprotein): HDL is also known as the "good" cholesterol. It helps clean out LDL from your arteries, and can decrease your risk of heart disease.

If your HDL is not above 40 mg/dL, then you need to improve it and have it checked every year.

TC (total cholesterol): This is the total amount of cholesterol in the blood, including LDL, HDL, and VLDL. If your total cholesterol is 240 mg/dL or greater, you have a greater risk of coronary heart disease and stroke.

TC:HDL-C ratio: This is called the "total cholesterol to HDL ratio." It is used to give doctors an idea of how much total cholesterol a person has relative to the HDL level. The ratio is calculated by dividing the total cholesterol by the HDL. It is a good measure of heart disease risk.

Okay, now onto the latest findings...this recent study published in the American Heart Journal found that patients that had higher HDL levels had a lower risk of heart attacks. More specifically, people with higher HDL (by 10 mg/dL) had an 11% decrease in heart disease risk.

Okay...so what does that mean? Do everything you can to increase your HDL!

First, you need to get your HDL levels checked...so visit your doctor. And always check with your doctor before making big changes to your nutrition and exercise plan...especially if you are overweight, or otherwise at risk for lifestyle diseases.

Second, a good place to start improving your cholesterol levels is to simply lose weight and to start an exercise program (both aerobic exercise and resistance training will improve cholesterol levels).

And when it comes to achieving healthy cholesterol levels, here are many more specific actions that you should take:

- Eat 6 small meals per day rather than 2-3 large meals.

- Eat a handful of almonds per day (make sure they are not roasted in hydrogenated oils!)

- Eat more fiber by eating almonds, fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, and perhaps even supplement with glucomannan - Get a minimum of 35g of fiber per day

- Reduce your intake of saturated fats & eliminate all trans fats from your diet

- Build muscle mass. There's some evidence that strength-training exercises that build muscle mass can also improve HDL.

- Do intervals - these might be even more effective than regular cardio for increasing HDL

- Both Green Tea and fish oils might help improve cholesterol levels (by both increasing HDL and lowering LDL), but research is not conclusive.

There is No Secret to Weight Loss

We have all heard the rants entitled the secret to weight loss, the miracle diet and all those other generic slogans that are designed to get us to read yet another sales pitch on some miracle diet that will get them pounds gone and gone fast. The key word being fast, we live in a busy time and none of us seem to have the time to follow the fundamental weight loss systems.

Let me begin by saying your weight, whether you are obese, a little heavy, carrying that holiday weight or whatever your current situation is not your fault. We are victimized daily by junk food chains or even relatively healthy eateries that offer that extra huge serving just for you! From the day we are old enough to comprehend to the day we die, and we are victimized. This is nothing new; it has been a prevalent part of our society for many, many years. The mass media is used as a tool by anyone who wishes to make a buck. The media is a sales mule, guised under the cloak of information, but a sales tool all the same. Turn on a TV and there it is, eat this, drink this, take this, buy, buy, buy, or more to the point consume, consume, consume. So again your weight is not your fault, but it is your responsibility.

The first thing to decide if you are keen on losing weight is this, do you want to just lose the weight or do you wish to get in shape and stay in shape without needing to fight with weight gain for the rest of your life. If you wish to only lose weight then this article may be of little help to you, but if your goals are to lose weight, keep it gone and develop a lifestyle that means living free of the threat of weight gain then please read on.

Sustained weight loss can only be found in one place, the mind. You have been trained since birth by the media to desire more than you need, some of this may be good, but there is a lot of it that is bad. The good can be the desire to achieve the best in life, good education, nice house, general comfort in lifestyle. The bad is where you are tricked into believing more is better by industries that thrive on your consumption. Such industries like fast food, tobacco are the most obvious and dubious, but consider the food industry in general, do you really need to super size just because it is better value for your buck, and ask yourself why it is better value? The answer is obvious is it not, because more consumption equals greater profits! These industries are willing to give larger portions of food at a cheaper price because they are in fact training you to believe that more is better, by doing this the food industries are increasing over all consumption, quantity is where these large industries make their profits, just look at all the All you can eat franchises, sure they say its healthy in some of them all you can eat salad bars etc, but too much even of a good thing is still bad!

Take one second and think on this, lets us say that you are looking at two sub sandwich stores, store A offers a good sized sub for $3, in fact the sandwich is exactly the right amount to slake your hunger, now store B has a big sign that says 20% more meat in our sub, but is also $3, which would you buy? Most of us wouldnt hesitate and Store B would rake in our business, but really do you need that extra 20%? We as consumers are always looking for the best bargain for our dollar, but in the end is over eating really a bargain we wish to be a part of it, look at what it is really costing you, your self esteem, your fitness and mostly your health! With heart disease, diabetes and obesity on the rise in so many places, I will say it again; the push towards over consumption by the food industry has the stench of big tobacco all over it.

Losing weight is a very difficult process for those of us who suffer from over eating, for many of us food has become an addiction, much akin to Tobacco. As with any addiction the first step is realizing that you are in fact addicted, after that the next and most crucial step in de-toxing that addiction from your body and more importantly from your mind, is to reprogram yourself, to solely retrain your body and mind to crave only what it needs, this is the real challenge in maintaining weight loss! I will sum up a few points that may help you get on the path to healthier food consumption:

Just because you feel hungry there is no need to completely fill the tank, instead consider your expected activities on that day and eat accordingly, just like your car, if you are only driving to the end of the street you dont need a full tank of gas!

Do not binge eat, you can starve yourself and effectively shrink your stomach size (a practice I am very much against, but using as an example here), but with only one gorge binge session you will effectively revert your appetite back to an unhealthy level and begin feeling hungry all over again, a binge eating session is much the same as an alcoholic falling off the wagon, instead I recommend many small healthy meals throughout the course of the day!

Realize that junk food tastes great for one reason only, to get you hooked! It does not constitute food in any way shape or form, remove it from your diet and believe me you will not miss it once the addiction fades

It all comes down to a single phrase which you will have heard before. Healthy mind equals a healthy body!

Why Snacking Works In Weight Loss

I love to snack. I love the satisfaction of crunching on something salty and following it up with something sweet. I am a self-proclaimed snackoholic. Most people when they think of weight loss, they immediately cut out snacking. What a shame! Without snacks, our lives would be dull with only three square meals each day. I will change your perception of snacking by showing you how choosing the right snacks will help you lose weight and feel better throughout the day.

Why we snack:

There are many reasons why we choose to snack. Sometimes it is because we are bored. Maybe it's because we had a stressful day. Other times, it is because we are simply hungry. If you are truly hungry, even at night, you should have a snack. The key is to snack for the right reason with the right balance of foods. When our bodies are used to eating high sugar, high fat "junk" foods we begin to crave these types of foods. Let's face it: fat, sugar and salt taste good. They may make us feel better temporarily, but after our bodies digest these types of foods, we usually feel worse than before. These sugary, high fat foods will raise our blood sugar levels very quickly giving us more energy, but they will also cause our blood sugar to come crashing down at a very fast rate. This can make us feel tired, sluggish and irritable.

It's important to train your mind to think differently about snacks and your eating habits so you begin to crave the right types of foods. It is also important to keep in mind that a snack should be designed to keep you satisfied until your next meal; it shouldn't fill you up completely.

Snacking can raise your metabolism:

When most of us think of dieting, we think of ways to cut out foods or meals. We automatically restrict and deny ourselves food in hopes that we will lose a lot of weight. Well, that usually works against us, especially when we stop dieting. The key is to eat every 4-5 hours. If you have breakfast at 6:30 am and lunch at noon, you need to eat a mid-morning snack. By restricting snacks, you are putting your body into starvation mode and actually slowing down your metabolism. If you frequently eat healthy foods, you will add "fuel to your fire" and contribute to burning more energy and increasing your metabolism. Always remember that you should be focusing on lifetime changes, not just short-term weight loss goals. Eliminating snacks forever is not realistic, but changing your snacking habits will provide you a lifetime of benefits.

The good, the bad and the ugly:

There are snacks that are really good for us, and those that are not so good for us. When planning your snacks, you want to consider a balance of lean proteins (like nuts, lean meats and low fat cheeses) with a whole grain or high fiber food (like fruits, vegetables, whole grain breads or crackers). Some examples of snacks for a mid-morning energy boost could be a low-fat yogurt, 1 ounce of nuts with a piece of fresh fruit, a high fiber/high protein granola bars, or 1 Tablespoon of peanut butter spread on some whole grain toast. Stay away from the high calorie, caffeine-coffee drinks and muffin from your favorite coffee shop. You could end up consuming around 800 calories and 30 grams of fat from one snack! Stick to snacks that are around 200 calories. If you are feeling sluggish mid-afternoon, try reaching for a whole grain pita and some hummus or make your own trail mix with dried fruits, granola, nuts and some small chocolate pieces. You will have a lot more energy from foods that fill you up, rather than a bunch of empty calories. Also, stay away from drinking soda pop. Try keeping water with you all day and sip on it. Water will give you the feeling of having more energy than a sugary soda. If you tend to snack at night in front of the television, try occupying your mind with a new task. Try crossword puzzles, knitting, or scrap booking. Place your snack food in a small bowl, instead of taking the whole bag with you. This will help you with portion control. And, when thinking of snacks, remember "out of sight, out of mind". If it's not in the house (or at the office), you will be less tempted to eat it!

Treating yourself:

We all like to treat ourselves every once in awhile. The key is moderation. Try healthier options of your favorites and eat less of these high fat, high sugar foods. And, remember it is okay to have a treat. Don't beat yourself up for eating a chocolate chip cookie or having a piece of cake at a birthday party. These special occasions are part of our lives and should be enjoyed. Just remember to balance these foods out with plenty of healthy foods and exercise and you will be on your way to your weight loss goals!

Losing weight feels great and can help prevent serious health issues like diabetes and heart disease. But with so many weight loss diets to choose from, it's hard to know which program is right for you.

To put this in perspective, let's look at just some of the different diets that are on the market today.

Low Carb: This type of diet combines high protein (and high fat) with a minimal amount of carbohydrates and is very successful, at least in the short term, for many people.

Portion Control: This diet teaches moderation in meal sizes and often focuses on adding larger portions of fruits and vegetables with moderate amounts of protein and minimal intake of starchy carbs like potatoes and white bread.

Points System: Assigning different point values to foods helps these dieters meal plan by the numbers. No food is off limits here, but a piece of full-fat cheesecake might take most of your points for the whole day!

Calorie Counting: This could be thought of the old fashioned way to lose weight. A specific daily calorie intake is set and you count the calories consumed throughout the day in order to meet, but not exceed, this number.

High Fiber: This approach to weight management focuses on eating a high fiber diet filled with whole grains, beans/legumes and fruits and vegetables. The general theory here is that, if you focus on eating high fiber foods, you will naturally eat fewer empty calories that contribute to obesity.

Exercise / Muscle Building: Using aerobic exercise and muscle building techniques is yet another approach to weight loss that involves less focus on what you eat and more on what you do with your body.

Diet Pills / Supplements: Diet pills and weight loss supplements are available in many different formulas, with or without stimulants such as caffeine, and can be used alone (with healthy eating and exercise) or in conjunction with a structured weight loss program.

The truth is, ANY diet that combines healthy eating with exercise has the potential to promote successful weight loss. Yet many dieters fail time and time again - no matter what program they choose.

The Reason Why Diets Fail

Although most diets have solid nutritional elements that result in weight reduction, they are missing the secret ingredient to permanent weight loss success: personalized SUPPORT.

The best way to understand how support can help you succeed at losing weight is to look at the reality television show, "The Biggest Loser." Why are the candidates on this show so successful at achieving life-changing weight loss? Because they aren't just put on diets and exercise programs, they also have a personal coach working with them side-by-side, day-after-day to keep them motivated and on course!

The journey to lasting weight loss is filled with pitfalls, distractions and plateaus. In fact, many people give up before ever reaching their goal weight (and gain every pound back - and more!). That's why it's so important to have someone supporting you every step of the way. Someone that will keep you on track when the going gets rough, talk you through weak moments, provide encouragement and motivation when you're ready to quit and to share your joy as you reach each milestone.

Finding the Best Support

Your best support system will be a friend, spouse, parent or other loved one who is willing to provide motivation and encouragement as you lose weight - and provide tough-love (or a kick in the butt) when needed!

However, many of us don't have someone who can offer that kind of support. The good news is that there are online resources that allow you to connect with a personal mentor that will keep you on task and make you a success at weight loss.

Any diet can help you lose weight. When choosing a program, make your choice based on the foods you enjoy and the lifestyle you lead - and make sure you add personalized support to ensure your success.

Fat Burning Furnace by Rob Poulos and Turbulence Training by Craig Ballantyne are 2 well known and popular diet and fitness programs. What are the similarities and the differences between these 2 programs, and which one should you use?

Both of these programs are excellent fitness oriented fat loss programs. Each of them has been used successfully by many people, both men and women, and provided excellent results. So you can achieve great results with either of these programs. However, there are a number of aspects in which one of them is better than the next.

Fat Burning Furnace by Rob Poulos is a 128 pages e-book packed with diet and exercise information. The big advantage of this program over Turbulence Training is the diet section of the program. Fat Burning Furnace goes into much more detail of the required nutrition to lose fat and keep it off. In Turbulence Training you get a bonus e-book which is centered on diet, but overall, I prefer the diet section of FatBurningFurnace.

On the other hand, FatBurningFurnace touches very lightly on cardiovascular workouts. Instead, it focuses on weight training, which it does in an easy to understand and apply manner. TurbulenceTraining handles cardio workouts very well. In fact, the main aspect of this program is how to create short but highly intensive strength and cardio workouts to burn the maximum amount of fat in as little time as possible. If you wish to do cardio in a much more effective fashion, choose Turbulence Training.

Both Fat Burning Furnace and TurbulenceTraining are excellent. Follow one of the following links to read more about each.

Liver Detox Diet

You probably know by now that the liver is one of the most important organs in the human body. It's the body's natural filter that helps convert toxins into substances that can be discarded easily. Therefore, to have a healthy body, it is of vital importance that we keep this important organ in good condition. A healthy liver means a healthy body. One of the ways to help maintain your liver in good working condition is to go on a liver detox diet.

Since the liver is the first to receive toxins that enter the body, it has one of the highest toxin accumulations in the body. While the liver's main task is to clean the toxins and other wastes that are absorbed by the bloodstream in the body, the liver does not always able to discard hard substances such as heavy metals. Some of these toxins don't end up leaving the body and then what will happen is that there will be a type of toxin buildup throughout the body, especially the liver. Therefore, it is more important to detox the liver than detoxification of any other body system. The objective of a liver detox diet is to cleanse the liver of all the toxic wastes that have stagnated in the liver over the years.

A liver detox diet involves a person restricting oneself to organic foods such as raw vegetables, fruits and whole grains. The 2 ingredients that the liver needs in order to function properly are water and glucose. These ingredients aid the body's system to get rid of accumulated toxins. So, drinking a lot of water helps as it helps to flush toxins out of your system. A person on a liver detox diet must avoid foods that are not liver friendly such as fried and processed foods, sugar, coffee and saturated fats.

All in all, a complete liver detoxification will help to restore functionality to the liver as well as to the rest of the body. All of the body's organs are vitally important to maintaining a healthy body, but cleansing your liver will help the most! If you're experiencing poor health, aching body, tired most of the time, go on a liver detox diet.

Recipes For Detox Diet

Here are three things that you definitely need to avoid if you want to lose weight. Many people don't even know about what I'm going to reveal right now, and that's one of the reasons why they can't lose weight - because if you eat the foods below then you will definitely put on the pounds. So here's a list of foods you should avoid...

1. "Natural Flavors" and "Spices"

Any package that says "Natural" on the front or the back generally means that the product does not contain any added "artificial" (having no counterpart in nature) additives, but it does not necessarily mean pesticides or other chemicals were not used in processing. Your potato chips that say "natural" could be genetically altered, grown with pesticides, and cleaned with unfiltered water and still read "All Natural!"

What is scary is that natural flavors and spices are assumed to be OK. But what is not OK is that any substance derived from something natural, no matter how dangerous it is, can be classified as a "natural flavoring." What's worse is that if a poisonous chemical is used to derive that flavoring, it can still be called "natural". Many natural flavors are synthesized from Isoprene, which is a known carcinogen! Isoprene stays in the food... it doesn't just disappear!

Manufacturers also hide monosodium glutamate (MSG)-a flavoring which causes headaches and allergic reactions-in their "natural flavorings" or "spices" listings because it is derived from seaweed, a natural product. So clearly, being natural is not the same as being harmless.

2. Irradiated Foods

Food irradiation is done by zapping food with a dosage of radiation. The X-rays are used to kill insects and bacteria, prevent sprouting, and slow rotting. While the process does not make the food radioactive, the chemical structure of the food is altered and there are a number of animal studies that show negative health effects. Some researchers suspect that a regular diet of irradiated food may cause leukemia, other forms of cancer, and kidney disease.

The FDA says it's safe. When you hear that, I want you to think about other things that were apparently safe... such as cigarette smoking, pesticides, asbestos and CFCs. Each of these at one time was classified as safe. The FDA claims irradiation of food is safe and has already authorized the irradiation of fruits, vegetables, pork, chicken, herbs, spices, teas, and seeds. Spices are the most widely irradiated food in the United States. You can avoid irradiation by buying 100% organic spices and foods.

NOTE: Avoid the microwave as well. This type of irradiation affects the chemistry of foods by activating the water molecules inside. If cooking does some damage to enzymes and foods, then microwaving is the equivalent to a nuclear blast, leaving everything once living lifeless and wilted.

3. Chemicals

This is the catch-all... As a general rule, anything that's longer than 15 letters, you can't pronounce and is hyphenated is generally not good for you.

Weight Loss Myths - Are You A Believer?

There is no field of science that is so full of myths as that of weight loss. Everyone tries to look for the easy way out and lose weight in a quick and safe manner. The reality of the situation is that weight loss requires a lot of will power, dedication and long time commitment. However, there are certain myths regarding weight loss that need to be exposed.

1) The most commonly heard myth is that eating ice cream actually causes weight loss. This so called theory is based on the assumption that since ice cream is cold, the body uses energy (measured in calories) to warm it up so we are actually consuming energy while eating it.

Though it is true that any action in the body requires energy, but by consuming ice cream that is so rich in fat and sugar the body actually takes in far more calories than what is used up to warm and digest it. Therefore, one must eat sweets in moderation.

The myth might even extend to drinking ice water. In this case at least its not harmful because ice water doesn't contain any calories. However, the energy that is used to warm it to our body temperature is actually negligible in terms of weight loss effect. One advantage is that by drinking water the body feels full and so we feel less hungry. It's also much lower in calories as compared to sugar laden sodas and orange juice.

Another myth you might have heard is that adding a pound of muscle makes the body burn an extra 50 calories. Not only is this untrue it is also meaningless. A pound of new muscle will at most burn only a dozen calories while just sitting consumes up to 70 calories per hour. The body consumes energy to maintain internal temperature, circulate and pump blood, repair worn out cells etc.

The concept of adding muscle is a good idea especially because in order to do so we participate in some form of vigorous exercise such as running or weight training. Mild exercise like walking helps to tone the body rather than build muscle. On an average one burns up to 350 calories in an hour long workout.

With vigorous exercise the body burns about 250 calories more than if one hasn't exercised in a day. Even if we alternate our days between working out and walking it will help keep our muscles well toned and prevent the build up of lactic acid that leads to sore muscles.

The truth is that if we consume more calories than we are able to burn, the remaining energy is stored in the form of chemical bonds in fatty tissues. When the body requires extra energy it will turn to those fat deposits in order to get the needed energy and this is what leads to weight loss and fat reduction.

Thus, a well balanced diet and age appropriate exercise are the only real means to reducing weight and keeping fit.

Sensible Weight Loss Whilst Breast Feeding

Many women have a hard time losing weight post pregnancy, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

"I've always believed if it took you 9 months to gain it, give yourself 9 months to get rid of it"

Have NO high expectations of this quick weight loss diets and fads, as it could be detrimental to your health and of your child's. Enjoy the time you have with no worry or hassles in the first few weeks as this time is best spent bonding with your new baby, and for you to recover mentally and physically after the birth.

Breastfeeding is the most natural and healthy way of nourishing your new baby. A mother's breast milk provides sufficient nutrients and a certain amount of antibodies from the mother that may help the baby to resist infections.

A mother has to eat double the amount of calories per day to sustain a high quality supply of breast milk. But don't let that fool you into eating whatever is in sight. By simply making sure that you remain well nourished by eating a healthy diet, gentle exercise and eating small snacks regularly and at least drinking 2 litres of water a day.

These things combined have shown to assist in gradual weight loss whilst providing an adequate supply of quality breast milk for your baby.

Breast milk is the primary source of food for a baby up until the age of 6mths that's when the infants iron stores are starting to run low. This is when solids are slowly introduced.

During this 6 month period and beyond, breastfeeding has many health benefits for the mother. One being the closeness that a mother and baby feel while feeding, the calming effect it has on him/her and the retracting of the mother's uterus, back to post pregnancy size.

For many mothers breastfeeding along with a healthy diet is the perfect combination for steady weight loss.

Breastfeeding places a great demand on mother's blood sugar supply and if the diet is not adequate in complex carbohydrate foods, sugar cravings and extreme hunger may occur.

By eating 3 healthy small portioned meals a day with snacks in between you will be soon on your way to a slimmer you. Eating every two to three hours helps maintain a good blood sugar supply and controls hunger.

Some simple suggestions for snack foods are:

Full Fat Yoghurt's Lots of fresh fruit & vegetables Rice crackers and cheeses At least 2 litres of water per day

Foods to avoid when the cravings attack are:

Refined foods i.e. fast foods Low fat foods (not giving you the calories to supply quality milk) Sweet biscuit, cakes Soft drinks, coffee & cordials

Don't expect the weight to just drop off, it takes time we all know that, but by following these basic steps you will be heading in the right direction to a slimmer you.

Will A Weight Loss Diet Pill Help?

We are all familiar with the ads; in fact, it would be difficult to go for an entire 24 hour period without seeing an ad for a weight loss diet pill. They come in a variety of shapes and colors, with some celebrity endorsements, complete with all the promises you want to hear. But, do they really help with weight loss? And, if they do, are they worth the potential side effects?

When comparing the many available types of oral weight loss support, it becomes immediately apparent that one of the main components is caffeine. Why? Caffeine helps to provide you with an extra source of energy that you may previously have obtained through snacking. While this may prove harmless and somewhat effective for some people, others might suffer increased anxiety, nervousness, and/or a feeling of irritability. The logic here is simple, if you may be caffeine sensitive and find that after using a supplemental pill for weight loss that you fall into the negative side effect category - pass on the pills!

Another common component of these oral supplements is their appetite suppression properties. Various combinations of natural, and not so natural, ingredients are used to reduce your desire to eat. Some people will find themselves with a sensitivity to these ingredients and experience a range of side effects. Cramping, headache, or nausea are very commonly experienced when taking a weight loss diet pill. If you're taking these pills and your side effects are anything more than minor and temporary - stop using the pills!

When it comes to supplementing your diet with any type of weight loss pill, the smartest thing you should do before starting is to consult with your physician. Your physician will advise you as to whether or not you even need this type of supplement. Your answer to weight loss may be as simple as a change in your dietary habits, or getting a little more exercise. Also, your physician is more familiar with your overall health than anyone else, and will provide you with professional advice regarding any over-the-counter weight loss product that may help you with dropping some pounds, and more importantly; point out any product or product ingredient that could create problems for you. When it comes to safe and healthy weight loss, the advice of your primary care physician is priceless.

If this course of action is approved for you, the good news is that the safe use of oral weight loss products can help many people curb their appetites while providing a little extra energy to help your body adjust to the the changes in your eating habits. Report any sign of side effects to your physician, take the weight loss diet pills as directed, and you should be fine.

Atkins Diet Bad Breath

People following the famous Atkins diet often encounter an unexpected and unpleasant side effect - Atkins diet bad breath. It's not their imagination that the diet causes an unpleasant odor on the breath, and it's very difficult to get rid of the problem while remaining on the diet. That's because this particular type of bad breath is not caused by the usual things.

Most cases of bad breath are caused by the production of volatile sulfur compounds (VSC) in the mouth. Anaerobic oral bacteria live in our mouths by the billions. They derive nutrition from food particles, sloughed off skin cells and other body proteins. When certain species predominate - species that produce VSC as a byproduct of metabolism - an unpleasant odor on the breath results. In the case of Atkins diet bad breath, the odor is not coming from the mouth and it isn't produced by the metabolism of bacteria. It's produced by the person's own metabolism.

The Atkins diet is based on severely restricting carbohydrates in the diet - especially in the early stages, dieters are allowed virtually no carbohydrates at all. Since carbohydrates are the usual source of energy in the body, their restriction forces the body to look for other sources of energy. It turns to stored fat - fat cells that most dieters have in plenty. When the human metabolism starts to break down fat cells for energy, a process called ketosis, ketones are produced as a byproduct and this is the agent of Atkins diet bad breath. Ketones are expelled in the urine and in the breath. In the breath, they are detected as a distinctly unpleasant odor - bad breath.

It's difficult to resolve the problem of Atkins diet bad breath as long as you stay on the diet: as long as your metabolism has no carbohydrates to break down, ketones will be produced by the breakdown of fat. Indeed, ketosis is the aim of the Atkins diet in the first place. In later stages of the diet, enough carbohydrates may be added to alleviate the problem; however, some dieters will have to settle for more carbohydrates and slower weight loss if they cannot tolerate the halitosis.

Breath freshening products may provide some relief and won't compromise the diet as long as they do not contain carbohydrates. For this particular problem, the products such as lozenges and breath strips that have a strong odor, usually mint, to mask bad breath are the best choices. Many people, however, will find it difficult to continue their use over the long term. For persistent Atkins diet bad breath, the best solution may be to find a different diet.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a famous weight loss program sweeping the nation. This ebook contains tips which are focused on giving dieters a NON starvation type of weight loss program. I think that nearly all of us can use some form of extra knowledge when it comes to losing weight and being healthy. Many men and women have used this program to great benefit, but with so many weight loss programs out there, how can you know if this particular program is the one for you?

I think what differentiates Fat Loss 4 Idiots from all the other weight loss programs and ebooks out there is that all the other programs are either the usual techniques that everybody knows about, or are so bizarre you wouldn't even try them on fear factor. Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a scientifically studied guide and that's what makes it special. None of the information is a scam or unhealthy, rather it is targeted at some knowledge of how your metabolism works and how to manipulate it to burn more calories than usual.

Is this guide right for you?

If you just want to learn some fad diet that will drop 20 pounds in one week (almost always only water weight) this is not the program for you. Using other programs may help you lose weight at first, but they will not contribute to your health in the long run. You may weigh less but you will not be healthier. Other programs are for the dieters that are looking for that quick fix, but end up feeling lethargic and tired because of lack of calories. Fat Loss 4 Idiots is a weight loss program for people that don't want to be starved and want permanent results for the long run.

Who is this guide for?

This guide can work for you if you fall into one of these categories:

1. Your husband or wife has given up on trying to become healthy. This program can get them motivated and healthy again.

2. Your eating habits have fallen into a routine. Now your metabolism knows whats coming. This program explains how to switch up your routine so your metabolism burns more calories!

3. You can't deal with starving yourself to death. This program keeps you energized. Starvation diets do not work and only leave you feeling miserable. Fat Loss 4 Idiots is not a starvation diet.

Psst, Want to Burn Fat Fast?

Hey you. Yeah you. Do you want to burn fat fast? I bet you've like to do it without having to exercise or having to change your diet. Well let me let you in on a well kept secret. Are you ready?

It ain't gonna happen. You can hope all you want, but unless you change what you're doing that got you over weight to begin with, you'll be "wishing on a star".

Why am I being so harsh? Actually, I prefer to call it tough love. Whatever you decide to call it, you need to realize that to lose those pounds, it's all up to you to make the necessary changes in your life.

But you say it's so hard!

I'm not going to tell you that it's easy to break old habits and start new ones. If it were easy, there wouldn't be a billion dollar industry built around just weight loss. That figure alone should suggest to you that something is afoot. (What can I say? I like Sherlock Holmes.)

What I am going to suggest to you is that you stop taking losing weight so seriously. I'm sure that it's a safe bet that if you look back at most of the changes you made in your life, you'll see that you didn't make a big deal out of them.

The change could have been something as simple as choosing another route to go to work or maybe changing your brand of toothpaste. Nothing life changing about those decisions. And even though the benefits from losing that extra weight may be life changing, the decision to make the change doesn't have to be.

Truth be told, everything in life is simple. It's when we try to live life that we make it hard.

So what should you do about trying to lose weight? The answer to that is simple. Simply keep it simple. The harder you try, the harder it becomes. When you stop stressing over every little aspect of losing weight you are going to find that something marvelous starts to happen.

Bit by bit, you'll actually find yourself doing the things necessary for you to lose weight. You may start out by just drinking more water. You may decide to go for a long walk. You may decide to go with a salad instead of a burger for lunch. You may even find yourself following that diet and exercise plan you laid out your hard earned cash for.

Whenever it happens, it is going to be because the fate of the world no longer rest on you following every minute aspect of your weight loss plan. Just like a seed sprouting from the soil, you'll gradually grow into doing all the things that stressed you out before. And when that happens, you'll wonder what the whole fuss was about anyway.
