You may not know this, but your body has a weight where it's comfortable at. This is called it's "set point". Say you lose weight but gain it right back. That's your body's set point at work. Sure you lowered your weight, but you didn't lower your body's set point... the weight it's comfortable at.

Since your body wasn't comfortable at your new weight, it basically made life hard enough for you to slip up and help persuade you to regain that weight so it could feel comfortable again. So understand that in order to lose weight permanently over the long term, you also need to pay attention to your body's set point. I'll get to that shortly.

Usually as a person ages, their set points gradually increase as well. This leads to weight gain. Now, your set point isn't a fixed weight. It changes both up and down depending mostly on your recent diet efforts and your recent exercise efforts.

I will leave diet to another discussion. But there is just 1 main exercise that beats all others when it comes to lowering your body's set point and helping you to maintain any weight loss. That exercise is walking.

Yep. Boring. I know.

However, if you're losing weight or lost weight and you don't want to gain it back, then you better start walking consistently. I mean dedicated walks. Don't even try to say you walk a lot around the house or throughout the day. Unless you're a mail carrier, I doubt you walk enough.

Ideally, and studies have proven this, you should take at least 10,000 steps in a day in order to lose weight or maintain a healthy weight. Most Americans take less than 4,000 steps each day. Pathetic.

Think of walking like this. You have 1,440 minutes in a day. If you can't spare 30 minutes of that to walk for your health, then you need to take a look in the mirror. That 30 minutes represents only 2% of your time each day.

Everyone is busy these days. We can all use that excuse. But it's just that, an excuse. You're health is the most important thing that you have. So don't treat it as the least important thing in your day.

Let me put this to you in terms of dollars. If you were to walk for just 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days every week, you'll probably end up saving over $2,000 a year in health related costs. Maybe not this year, but definitely in future years. It adds up. So invest in yourself now! Consider walking like a retirement account. Now get walking.
